- Bypass pneumatic conveying systems provide the capacity of transporting some materials that are not naturally suited to dense phase flow in a low velocity, dense phase flow regime. Bypass pneumatic conveying systems also provide a passive capability to reduce minimum particulate transport velocities. In bypass systems, energy consumption is believed to be one of the key parameters to be considered in choosing these systems and is influenced by the material properties but and the bypass configuration within the pipe. The aim of this paper was to experimentally investigate the effect of the bypass configurations on the energy consumption in the pneumatic transport of fly ash. The bypass system was built with a main pipe of diameter 79 mm with an internal bypass pipe configuration with an orifice plate flute arrangement. It was found that the air mass flow rate at the pressure minimum point in pneumatic conveying characteristics curve decreased with the increase in bypass diameter. The results showed that specific energy consumption increased when decreasing the diameter of orifice plates and the spacing of bypass pipe flute. Conversely, the specific energy consumption increased with increasing bypass diameter due to the reduction in circulation area of the main pipe and the increase in wall friction due to larger wall surface area.
